I feel we are at a precipice.
In a lot of ways (read the book of revelation 13 if you want to go real deep on this idea)
But lets stick to the media.
Draymond Green has been a leader in the idea of the “New Media”.
The “New Media” definitely isn’t new. But sometimes formalizing an idea helps it go from popular with the masses to mainstream. I differentiate popular – widely accepted and liked and the mainstream – considered normal or what’s in the “big media” (I’ll define this as corporate media with million or billion dollar backing and a foothold in distribution).
An analogy to this popular vs mainstream acceptance is Andrew Wiggins. No doubt the popular opinion is Wiggins is an exceptional player and one of the top players in the league. His game speaks for itself to the true fans of the sport. But the mainstream is still catching up and living in a fog of “draft bust”, “overpaid”, “worst defender”, “trade piece”, “bag of cookies” takes they still haven’t recovered from and can’t shake quickly without completely losing face.
What about this site?? We are obviously New Media! Things are changing. The dominant source of opinions has long been big news network staples. But the influx of opinions and the lowered barrier to getting your opinion has slowing eroded big media. It will happen quickly but the new media topple Big Media. Will big media go away? Not likely. But it will become more of a playing field. Players going to the bigs, players going back to the new media rung, creation of new teams/sites that rival size and reach of the old big media chains. It’ll be interesting.
Entertainment will matter. Great analysis will matter. But it will be a new playing field. I’m a fan of all it. You’ll have voice with feet in both (JJ Redick, Draymond). You’ll have the veterans of big media (Stephen A, Skip Bayless, Cowherd). There’s the former players who have made their way in the big media (Jwill, Jalen Rose, Shannon Sharpe, Richard Jefferson, Keyshawn.. Legler, etc). The newcomers you might not know yet. They might not even be putting their opinions out there. But its already here and it will only grow. It’s exciting to see what will come.
