I’m not much a football fan but I’m a sports fan. This is my hot take on Tom Brady as the GOAT across all sports.
He just recently won his 7th Championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the age of 43. That’s more championships than any single franchise. (He won 6 with his previous franchise the New England Patriots).
I can’t really comment on whether he is the GOAT of the NFL. But I would argue against him being the GOAT of all the major league sports.
The QB is the NFL is in the unique position where their play alone is the biggest factor in whether they win or lose a game. No other single player really has the chance to affect the game to the same extent. Receivers and running backs have the second best chance but they only get a fraction of the touches a QB gets. A cornerback may have the best chance on the defensive end but the opposition could just keep the ball out of their territory. A defensive lineman could have a big impact but how many can you name?
Brady no doubt is an amazing QB.
Although he did likely benefit from a good situation in New England. In the 2008 season when he was out Matt Cassel had a stellar year.
Brady does have the quality of being clutch in big games.
But he did lose 3 super bowls. (Maybe not a real negative because that means his team got there).
My argument boils down to the QB being the position that garners all the attention for teams that win. Brady gets all the accolades while playing on only one side of the ball. It’s debatable how elite of an athlete he has been. QBs are having extremely long careers nowadays and I don’t think it’s a product of their athletic ability. He’s undoubtedly one of the greatest QBs of all time. Football is mostly definitely not my sport. I just don’t think QBs have much standing in the GOAT debate in comparison to major sports like Basketball, hockey, soccer or baseball.
